When I was twenty-one, I was an all-American
track star, a two-year letterman at Texas A&M University. I
had aspiration to earn a spot on the 1976 Olympic Team. I love Track
& Field and I wanted to achieve my highest potential.
In the spring of 1974, my mother died
after an accident. My father died exactly a year later; he was heartbroken
and a perfect testament to the power of the mind. His love for my
mother made it difficult for him to continue living after she passed
on. They left behind two daughters and three sons. My youngest sister
was under ten at the time, and there was no one willing to care
for her so I made a selfless decision in the fall semester of 1975
to relinquish my track scholarship and career to care for my younger
sister. To make a long story short, I walked away from a track career
while in my prime and filled with unfulfilled aspirations.
For many years thereafter, I expressed
my desire to compete in my favorite sport, and for the chance to
reach my potential. I stayed active over the years, competing on
occasions but never really testing my potential. The pressure of
career and family dictated my priorities.
I am pleased to tell you that I am competing
again. I am currently an All-American masters’ athlete, with
one of the fastest times in the world in the 400 meter run.
It hasn’t been easy to achieve.
It took me two years of mind and body discipline to be able to compete
with myself and to work out at a level that would allow me to achieve
world-class status again, relative to my age. I have finally reached
this point in my return journey; my goal now is to achieve a time
that equals the master’s world record for category of fifty
to fifty-four-year olds. I am running times athletes fifteen years
my junior would have a hard time making.
When I look back to the private victories
I’d had to achieve just to reach my current level of health
consciousness, I consider this a star-moving experience in my life.
It confirms much of what I have discussed in my book (Moving
the Stars With Your Words) about our ability to move the stars,
no matter what they may be.
I share this story for the purpose of
inspiring anyone with a desire to reverse the aging process, to
be more active in life, to lose weight, to quit an unhealthy habit,
or to accomplish any health goal that requires choice and commitment.
You have the power within you to achieve the same type of victories.
All you must do is speak your word with conviction and faith—doubt
will vanish without a trace.
